About the Event

Welcome to SCREENPLAY: A Write & a Pint’s 5-week course in writing for film.

Whoever you are - whatever level of writing you're at - please join us!

In five weeks, you’ll learn all of the basic elements of screenwriting and will be encouraged to write your own feature-length movie.

We’ll walk you through it.

Then we’ll prompt you to pitch or send your work to a producer and provide details and links for you to do so.

If you're writing a novel or a short story, screen-writing is a great discipline for you to learn, to "show not tell" or "think visually", and this could be a great opportunity to turn the world of your narrative into something much bigger.

Whether you're a seasoned professional, or a complete beginner without so much as an idea, you're more than welcome (we'll be creating some new ideas that you can use in the first session).

Join us if you want to learn about:

  • How to generate an idea for a script
  • How to create a compelling character
  • The basic 3 act structure
  • Log-lines
  • Sluglines
  • Premise
  • Concept
  • The one-pager
  • Treatment
  • Step outlines
  • Zero draft
  • First draft
  • Beatsheets
  • Who’s your protagonist?
  • What’s at stake?
  • Scene writing
  • Dialogue
  • Subplots
  • How to format your script
  • How to write a full screenplay
  • Pitching your work to a producer

Your host, Sean, has trained as a screenwriter with MetFilm and Scriptwriters&Co., and has been teaching creative writing (more broadly) for 6+ years.

Together, you’ll have the opportunity to brainstorm ideas, work through some industry standard exercises, aspire to a deadline, and make sure you finish the course with a substantial piece of work, ready to submit.

Our course is only £85. Comparable courses range from approx. £300 to £5000 (since we’re not an institution, we’re able to charge considerably less for similar course material).

Films we’ll discuss include:

The Secretary

Get Out

The Matrix

Little Miss Sunshine

2001: A Space Odyssey

The Tenant

The Player

The Truman Show

+ we’ll share these screenplays with you, so you can see how they’re formatted and everything they contain.

No experience of screenwriting is necessary.

No pressure to read or share your work in front of the group.

Just sit back, listen, learn and write, then picture your name in lights.

Join us now for your chance to create something truly magnificent.

Sessions will be on Zoom (you do not need the app to attend). They will take place each Thursday, between 7pm - 9:30pm, beginning 17th March, then 24th March, and 7th, 14th and 21st April (that's 5 Thursdays but with a week's gap after the 2nd and 3rd session, to allow you to develop your ideas).

Please don’t hesitate to contact us directly if you have any questions. Text: 07534 981 636. We’re happy to help.

Four weeks or lively, friendly conversation, encouragement, discipline, plenty of time to write, and a unique opportunity to kick-start your literary career.
