About the Event

Hi there!

Join us - whoever you are - and learn about the vibrant mythic tradition of the heroine's journey.

Write a story in 5 weeks, with a female, male, or non-binary character of your imaginative creation (don't worry - we'll help you with this!).

Learn about the ancient myths of the Egyptian Isis, the Greek Demeter and Persephone, and Inanna from ancient Sumeria.

Listen as we compare and contrast the likes of Wonder Woman and Star Wars, to Harry Potter and Twilight.

We'll be referring largely to Gail Carriger's book The Heroine's Journey: For Writers, Readers, and Fans of Pop Culture. But we'll also be referring to Joseph Campbell and his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces, to demonstrate the difference between traditional conceptions of the hero and the heroine.

Each week, we'll set you on a variety of creative writing exercises, to help you conceive a character, write scenes, and plot the various stages in your heroine's journey.

FYI: in this tradition, Harry Potter is considered to be a Heroine, while Wonder Woman is considered a Hero. It's not the gender of the character that matters, it's what they do. Neither does your character have to be a HEROINE in the super-hero(ine) sense; they can be just a regular old Jo(anna) - it's up to you.

We'll give you the knowledge and theory, and you can play with your own ideas, using the journey as a basic blueprint for a compelling new narrative.

...

No pressure to read out loud.

No experience of writing is necessary.

We'll never put you on the spot to present ideas in front of the group.

You don't even need an idea!

Just sit back, listen, learn, and make serious headway with a new, substantial piece of writing before the course is up.

...

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact Sean, the organizer, and he'll be happy to help.

*Note: the dates for this course are (Thursdays) the 10th, 17th, 24th of June, and the 1st and 8th July, always between 7:30 - 9:30pm.
