About the Event

Hi there,

If you have an idea for a film, a character, or if you’ve started writing your screenplay already, this is the perfect opportunity for you to get clear on plot and write LOADS of scenes + get lots of feedback from your screenwriting peers.

In the first session we’ll be covering an overview of the different types of story, according to Hollywood screenwriting guru, Blake Snyder and his “beat sheets”.

Each week we'll be looking at a different “beat sheet”, i.e. one that follows either the Golden Fleece narrative, the Whydunnit, the Rites of Passage, the Fool Triumphant, the Buddy Love, the Dude with a Problem narrative style, or another tried and tested story type.

Meanwhile, we’ll return to the main Blake Snyder template for you to fill out for your story, in order to make serious progress with your screenplay.

*Note: if you don’t know what a “beat” or a “beat sheet” is… don’t worry! Suffice it to say, this is a highly regarded industry method for writing a screenplay that sells. So all the more reason to join us!

...

This course is going to focus intently on:

Plotting (using Blake Snyder’s Beat Sheets)

Scene Writing (with exercises on writing visually and dialogue)

Feedback

+ Where to send your work when you're done!

But we’ll also share with you the presentation slides of our previous course, which was all about:

- Character development

- Formatting

- Scene construction

- Protagonist

- Antagonist

- Theme

- Symbolism

- Dialogue

- Outlines

- Step-outlines

- Treatments

If you're a complete newcomer here, you're more than welcome - we'd love to have you with us.

All compulsory sessions will be held online on Thursday nights between 7:30 - 9:30pm - and we'll send you a link to join each week.

All you need is a character, an idea for your story, and the desire to get it finished and made into a film.

For this course, we're proud to announce that we're going to be joined by director/producer Jermaine Blake, who has worked variously for BBC Productions, ITV, and Channel 4, and is a former script reader himself.

Your host, Sean, has been hosting creative and therapeutic writing workshops for 6+ years, and has recently studied screenwriting with MetFilm/Ealing Studios.

The kind of information, encouragement, and expertise you'll receive from Sean, Jermaine, and the wider group, could be invaluable if you're serious about getting your screenplay up-to-scratch.

If you have any questions at all about this course, please get in touch - we're happy to help.

Films we'll ask you to watch over the course of the 6 weeks include:

Sessions are to be held on the 25th March, and the 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th of April. That’s Thursdays, between. 7:30pm - 9:30pm (+ we’ll even offer you the opportunity to join us on the occasional Saturday or Sunday, but only if you’d like to, for short films, discussions, and timed writing sessions, to make sure you make loads of progress).
